Guide To Durian Tree Care After Harvest

26 Jul 2024

After harvesting, durian trees become weak and need careful care. Therefore, farmers need to care for durian trees scientifically to ensure productivity for the next crop. In the following article, Baconco will provide detailed instructions on how to care for durian trees after harvest for farmers to refer to and apply.

Why is durian tree care important after harvest?

Taking care of durian trees after harvest is extremely important because:

  • Tree weakening: Durian trees use a lot of nutrients to nourish the fruit, making the trees weak.
  • Tree recovery: To produce more fruit, many gardeners have applied measures to stimulate flowering, inhibit shoot development, and reduce fruit drop,... This leads to a situation where the tree has poor resistance, is susceptible to pests and diseases, and reduces crop yield.
  • Preparation for the next harvest: After harvest, the tree needs time to accumulate nutrients for the new crop, and this needs to start right after harvest.
  • Increased economic efficiency: Healthy trees that are properly cared for will produce large, high-quality fruits, bringing economic benefits to growers.
  • Extended tree lifespan: Post-harvest tree care helps trees recover, grow well, extend their lifespan, and bring long-term economic efficiency.

Reasons why durian trees recover slowly after harvest

Despite careful care after the harvest season, durian trees may not recover effectively. Here are some common reasons:

  • Nutrient deficiency: Trees do not absorb enough essential nutrients due to improper fertilization time, dosage and type, degraded soil, lack of organic matter,...
  • Extreme weather: Hot sun, heavy rain, storms, drought,... affect the development of the tree, making it difficult for the tree to recover.
  • Polluted environment: Factors such as air, water, soil, light,... affect the health of the tree.
  • Pest and disease attacks: Trees are attacked by pests and diseases after harvest, weakening them and hindering the recovery process.
  • Improper care techniques: Improper pruning, unreasonable fertilization, lack of water,... make it difficult for trees to recover.
  • Tree variety: Due to the weak health of the tree variety, it is easy for the tree to get sick and recover slowly.
  • Old trees: Old trees have weak vitality and recover more slowly than mature trees.

How to care for durian trees after harvest

Fertilizing durian trees immediately after harvest can lead to fertilizer waste because the trees cannot absorb nutrients right away. Farmers should clean the garden by pruning, washing the trees, and improving the soil within 7-10 days, then focus on fertilizing.

Step 1: Pruning

Pruning durian trees after harvest is an important technique to help trees recover, become healthy, and yield better yields in subsequent crops. Pruning has the following effects:

  • Helps the tree focus nutrients on healthy branches, enhancing the vitality of the tree
  • Prevents the spread of pests and diseases to other branches, protecting the tree from serious diseases
  • Helps trees photosynthesize more efficiently, recover faster, and increase yield

Pruning principles:

  • Diseased branches
  • Dry, old, weak branches
  • Branches that shade light, branches growing in the canopy
  • Branches with remaining fruit stalks, intersecting branches
  • Branches less than 1m above the ground

Step 2: Wash the trees

During harvesting, durian harvesters move from tree to tree to cut the fruit, making it easy for pests and diseases to spread. Washing the trees after harvest is very important because:

  • Creates a clean, airy environment for the tree
  • Limits the spread of mold and pathogens

How to perform:

  • Gardens with low risk of fungal diseases: Use lime powder mixed with water to spray the entire tree thoroughly, you can combine brushing lime water on the main trunk of the durian tree from the ground up to about 1m to prevent pests and diseases from attacking.
  • Gardens with many diseases: Combine SUPER ARMOR with THE RICE STAR to spray the entire tree. Can be sprayed again after 5-7 days if the tree is heavily infected.

After that, farmers need to clean the durian garden by collecting weeds, fallen leaves, and fallen fruits around the base.

Step 3: Soil improvement

Before harvesting, farmers need to use a lot of fertilizer and limit watering, making the soil dry and hard, with poor water absorption capacity.

Therefore, farmers need to improve the soil to increase its ability to absorb nutrients, enabling durian trees to recover quickly and develop roots.

How to perform:

  • Lightly plow the soil surface, taking care not to damage the durian roots
  • Water with lime: increase soil pH, prevent pests and diseases
  • For gardens with many fungal diseases: treat the tree for diseases first. If necessary, farmers can water with lime water 1 week after spraying.

Step 4: Fertilizing and nurturing new shoots

From the time after harvest until flowering, durian trees usually produce 3 sets of new shoots. If well cared for, the tree will develop a set of shoots every 45 days. This way, the tree will have enough yield for the next season.

After 7-10 days of cleaning the garden, farmers apply ORGANICONCO organic fertilizer at a dose of 500-1500 kg/ha/time (can be combined with NPK fertilizer) to help trees absorb nutrients from the soil, improve soil structure, make the soil loose and airy, and increase moisture retention.

After the tree sprouts new shoots (spear-shaped), use Supertan Xanh foliar fertilizer with a dose of 10-15 g/8 liter tank to promote new shoots and branches, nourish and protect leaves for the tree, helping the tree to create a new set of healthy, quality leaves.

Notes when caring for durian trees

When caring for durian trees after harvest, farmers need to keep the following in mind:

  • It is necessary to regularly monitor the health status of the tree, ensuring that the durian tree recovers well, is not infected with pests and diseases, and has green, strong, and healthy leaves.
  • Fertilizer should be applied about 40cm away from the base of the durian tree, avoiding fertilizing too close to the roots to prevent affecting the health of the root system.
  • A care method suitable to the climate, soil, and plant variety should be applied.
  • When using any chemical products for trees, farmers need to pay attention to using the correct dosage and following the instructions for use recommended by the manufacturer.* It is necessary to consult with agricultural experts to find the most appropriate durian tree care method.
  • Constantly update feasible advanced techniques to farm scientifically and properly.

Durian is a fruit tree with high economic efficiency and great market demand, but it is difficult to care for. In order for the durian garden to recover after harvest, ensure harvest for the next crop, and prolong its lifespan, gardeners are required to have a long-term investment plan and proper care techniques so that the trees can develop and give high yields in the face of extreme weather conditions like today.
