Preparing an abundant supply for the Tet market

In the final months of the year, Tet flower production in the Mekong Delta enters its peak season. Sa Dec bustling with Tet flower activities

In Sa Dec City (Dong Thap Province) - a well-known ornamental flower growing area in the Mekong Delta - farmers have begun producing short-term Tet flowers such as marigolds, pico chrysanthemums and gerberas. Meanwhile, pompon chrysanthemums, the key flower variety, were planted around three months earlier to ensure they bloom at the right time for Tet.

This year, cooperatives and garden households in Sa Dec flower villages are expected to supply hundreds of thousands of flower pots to the market. Many streets in the area are also being prepared for flower displays and product showcases, serving Tet shopping demand and various flower festival activities.

Cho Lach increases output for the Tet flower market

The vibrant atmosphere of Tet flower production can also be seen in Cho Lach District (Vinh Long Province), a locality with a long-standing tradition in seedlings and ornamental plants. With approximately 3,500 hectares of production area, many gardens are focusing on caring for pompon chrysanthemums, marigolds, yellow apricot blossoms and other decorative flowers.

According to local plans, Cho Lach flower villages are expected to supply around 2.5 million ornamental flower products for the Tet flower market. Among them, pompon chrysanthemums account for the largest volume, followed by marigolds and various other flowers to meet people’s Tet decoration needs.

Weather conditions and rising input costs pose challenges

Alongside the busy production season, Mekong Delta farmers growing Tet flowers also face significant challenges. Unstable weather conditions have caused some flower areas to bloom earlier than expected, forcing growers to apply technical measures to adjust growth cycles.

In addition, high tides in several riverside areas have caused localized flooding, affecting planting schedules. Rising prices of fertilizers and agricultural inputs are also expected to impact production costs and Tet flower prices this year.

Diversifying products for the Lunar New Year flower season

Beyond traditional flower varieties, many gardens have expanded into producing paper flowers and shaped ornamental plants to diversify offerings for the Tet flower market. Early and careful preparation allows farmers to proactively manage supply, with expectations of stable market demand during the Tet season.

With synchronized preparation across key growing areas, Tet flower production in the Mekong Delta is expected to meet consumer demand well, bringing vibrant spring colors to provinces and cities nationwide during the upcoming Lunar New Year.
